The Subhedar’s Daughter-in-Law (Story of Shivaji Maharaj)
During the expansion of the Swarajya, Shivaji Maharaj assigned Abaji Sondev to capture the important Kalyan province. Abaji led the Marathas, defeated the local Subhedar Mulana Hayati, and looted Kalyan’s treasures.
Hearing of the beauty of Mulana Hayati’s daughter-in-law, Abaji thought presenting her to Shivaji Maharaj would please him. He brought her along with the loot to the court.
Shivaji Maharaj, impressed by the victory, immediately condemned the idea of treating a woman as loot. He told Abaji that women, even of enemies, should be treated as mothers, not gifts. He released her safely, granted her respect, and ensured proper arrangements for her and her family.
Abaji Sondev was deeply humbled, realizing the king’s sense of justice and humanity. The story highlighted Shivaji Maharaj’s respect for women, even in times of war.
